The objective of this dissertation is twofold: to prove that the Novelas ejemplares are a hybrid genre, and to present disguise as an essential element in their exegesis. The twelve short novels of Miguel de Cervantes' Novelas ejemplares (1613) have been characterized as |comedies in prose,| and among all literary genres drama is the most prevalent in them. Cervantes uses dramatic devices consistently to stage performances and to create story lines within these novellas. The disguise motif, presented as a ritualized performance, opens new avenues for the interpretation of the Novelas ejemplares. Concealment serves as both a structuring device and a dramatic technique. This study examines why the masking of identity and actions is so prevalent in Cervantes' prose, and interprets the repercussions of these concealments. My methodology incorporates two main lines of inquiry: performance theory to explore the ritual of disguise, and new historicism to investigate its broader context and social and literary implications. Each chapter studies a specific manifestation and consequence of disguise. Chapter One analyzes madness and perversion in the psychological disguises of El licenciado Vidriera and El celoso extremeño. The next chapter explores sexual violence as an outcome of concealment in La fuerza de la sangre and La ilustre fregona. Chapter Three examines the imposed and voluntary masks present in La gitanilla and La española inglesa. Chapter Four probes the theatrical camouflages of El amante liberal, Rinconete y Cortadillo, Las dos doncellas and La señora Cornelia. Finally, the last chapter unveils the reality of personal relationships in El casamiento engañoso, and the capacity and boundaries of human reason in El coloquio de los perros. The analysis of these concealed identities demonstrates how the Novelas ejemplares trace the archaeology of interpersonal relationships and those between man and nature in Cervantes' time. Consequently, this study offers new insights into the development of Spanish subjectivity in the seventeenth century.
